Just like that

Although mighty and ferocious, Rupert found himself weak and vulnerable. Wandering about searching for comfort from the cold. Not only was his tummy grumbling but, his heart was weighed down. He was lonely, looking for a friendly face, someone who could spend time with him and help him heal.

At one time Rupert was a mighty warrior who could make anyone tremble at the sound of his mighty roar! But now the loudest sound was that of his empty belly. As the cold wind blew he wondered, "Is this the end for me?", "After everything I've done, all the sacrifices I've made, will I die a cold and lonely washed-up pile of ruin?" "Is this the thanks I get?".

Time went on, days turned into months of despair, and even the weather was dreary. He found food where he could and continued on. One day along his scavenging for food he hears music, a sound he had never heard before. It seemed to come from over a hill, he decided to go towards the sound to investigate. As he reaches the top of the hill and sees in the distance a beautiful view, he's not sure what this could be but it is very beautiful. Should he go down to inspect it? He was so weary he felt like this would be just another disappointment. So he sat in the snow and watched for some time. He thought about the nights that he looked up at the stars in the sky and whispered prayer after prayer and ended each prayer with "Please hear my supplication and answer my prayers, please rescue me!"

These thoughts filled his mind and became more intense, louder, and louder in his mind. Unable to hush his thoughts he stood up and as if he was being dragged along by his thoughts he headed toward this beautiful location with the beautiful sounds.

As he approaches he sees someone, an older man with white hair, just like him, and a long beard. He was unsure of this situation but when the man caught sight of him he immediately smiled. His soft kind eyes welcomed Rupert and made him feel something he had never felt before. There was a warmth in his chest and he felt completely safe. The man went into the beautiful place for some time. Upon returning he was holding a plate so big he could hardly walk. The plate was covered with delicious food!

Rupert's mouth watered as he could smell the plethora of foods! The man slowly walked toward Rupert and stopped a few feet away, put the food on the ground, and walked back. With his hands, he motioned to Rupert that the food was for him and then slowly walked away.

Rupert was unsure of what to do but his demanding tummy made it clear what to do next. As he walked up to his dinner he took a sniff, then two, and then began eating all the food as fast as he could!

After he finished his meal he cuddled up next to a warm part of this beautiful building and drifted off to sleep. As days went on the kindness of the man softened the heart of this once mighty warrior. As their friendship grew the man told Rupert "Rupert, although you have been through many trials and you may have felt that your time doing good and fighting for what is right is up, it is not, your many troubles have made you an even better warrior. You will continue to fight for what is right but now you will have more compassion for those who you fight for... " and just like that Rupert's trial came to an end. He continued his friendship with the old man who was his friend and comforter. He still fights for what is right and at the end of the day he comes home to his favorite meal.
